New technology available for treating neck and back pain
Sharon Regional's Comprehensive Pain Management Center is now offering Radio
Frequency Thermo-Ablation, one of the newest techniques available for
treating chronic neck and back pain. Radio Frequency Thermo-Ablation offers
patients suffering from back or neck pain a non-surgical, outpatient alternative
to alleviate their pain and allow them to return to their everyday activities.
Ashraf Razzak, M.D., an anesthesiologist with the Comprehensive Pain
Management Center, is very excited about the benefits that Radio Frequency
Thermo-Ablation will bring to individuals suffering from chronic neck
and back pain. "We're pleased to be one of the only facilities in the region
that can provide this newest form of pain relief," stated Dr. Razzak.
"This allows our patients to return to a much greater quality of life, and
resume many activities of daily living, including work, family activities,
and recreation."
Radio Frequency Thermo-Ablation is a process that interrupts and
decreases pain signals, and is generally used following other more conservative
approaches. After pinpointing the exact location of the pain, the physician
uses live x-ray fluoroscopy to precisely guide a needle to the targeted
area. An electrode is then inserted through the needle in which radiofrequency
current is passed, heating the nerve tissue and eliminating its ability
to transmit pain signals. The pain relief lasts anywhere from 9 months to
2 years. The nerves may eventually regenerate and additional procedures
may be required.
The new procedure is just one of several clinical and procedural enhancements
being added to Sharon Regional's Comprehensive Pain Management Center.
The Center provides a comprehensive program for the evaluation and treatment
of pain for both inpatients and outpatients.
