Local couple grateful for lung cancer surgery available at Sharon Regional

“We’re very grateful that my husband, Lloyd, was able to have his lung surgery here in instead of Pittsburgh,” says June Stull. “We wanted Dr. (Rodney) Landreneau but didn’t know he was available at Sharon Regional. We’re very fortunate he could do the surgery here; it saved a lot of inconvenience.”

Dr. Landreneau is an internationally renowned thoracic surgeon and a member of the Magovern Group (Cardio-Thoracic Surgical Associates, Inc.), which provides cardio-thoracic surgery services at Sharon Regional. Each year the group performs about 2,500 lung and esophageal operations, 700 vascular operations, and 2,000 cardiac operations at Allegheny General Hospital and affiliated surgery centers such as Sharon Regional.

The chain of medical events that concluded with Lloyd’s surgery started recently when he had a supposedly routine physical from the Stull’s family physician, Robert Martsolf, M.D., and continued with his admission to the hospital of Sharon Regional and a referral to Jeffrey Lazar, M.D., FCCP, board certified pulmonologist and medical director of The Lung Center.

More extensive testing directed by Dr. Lazar revealed a cancerous tumor on Lloyd’s left lung and, through The Lung Center, Dr. Landreneau was consulted.

“We’re thrilled to have a high-quality, internationally-known surgeon like Dr. Landreneau working with us at The Lung Center,” says Dr. Lazar.

Dr. Landreneau was also highly recommended to the Stulls by Dr. Joy Boone a family friend and former Shenango Valley physician now in the Pittsburgh area. Dr. Landreneau recently was selected to become a Fellow of the American Surgical Association, a prestigious medical society considered by many to be among the highest of honors in the field of surgery. The Louisiana native also is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the American Association of Thoracic Surgery and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, among other organizations.

Dr. Landreneau is board certified in general and thoracic surgery and is a Professor of Surgery, with tenure, through the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine. He has helped pioneer numerous procedures for the treatment of lung and esophageal cancer and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

“I’m very pleased to be part of a team to bring top-quality lung and esophageal clinical program to Sharon Regional,” says Dr. Landreneau. “It takes the awkwardness out of someone having to go to Pittsburgh, Erie or Cleveland, which used to be routine.”

Lloyd returned home about a week after his surgery.

“We just can’t say enough about Lloyd’s excellent care from everyone-the doctors and nurses were excellent,” June adds. “We’re very thankful to God and pleased that everything just seemed to fall into place here. It’s great to have him home.”
