Cryoablation for the Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation

Cryoablation is an alternative therapy that Sharon Regional electrophysiologists use to treat atrial fibrillation, a type of heart rhythm disorder. It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses
a thin, flexible balloon catheter to locate and freeze the heart tissue that triggers an irregular heartbeat. Unlike heat-based ablation, cryoablation allows physicians to cool tissue to make
sure it is the area causing an irregularity. If it is not, the site's normal electrical funcation can be restored simply be allowing the tissue to thaw.

The Heart and Vascular Institute also provides heart imaging through cardiac CT and MRI, which is based at the Diagnostic and Imaging Center, Garden Way, Hermitage

Cardiologist J. Ronald Mikolich, M.D
., is based at the Center and specializes in both Cardiac CT Angiography and Cardiac MRI, while maintaining a Consultative Cardiology practice.

Dr. Mikolich is board certified in Coronary CT Angiography, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Internal Medicine, and is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Mikolich utilizes these imaging techniques to diagnose blocked arteries to the heart, malfunctioning heart valves, impaired heart muscle function, as well as congenital heart disease. Frequently, these non-invasive tests help physicians “see” disease processes that are not well visualized with older imaging modalities, such as pericarditis.

Vascular Surgery Program

The vascular surgery program, under the direction of John Ambrosino, M.D., offers a range of arterial procedures such as peripheral artery angioplasty, carotid endarterectomy, and arterial bypass surgery.

A recent expansion to the vascular surgery program now offers transilluminated powered phlebectomy, a less invasive surgical procedure to treat varicose veins. Dr. Ambrosino utilizes this new procedure which allows surgeons to see the veins during the procedure and visually confirm their removal. Compared to traditional varicose vein surgery, the new procedure is faster, has fewer incisions, better visualization for the surgeon, and results in more complete vein removal.
