Heart Attacks: Study finds angioplasty preferred treatment

Sharon Regional part of national heart attack treatment program

Sharon Regional part of national heart attack treatment program

Sharon Regional Health System is one of 600 hospitals across the United States participating in CRUSADE, a nationwide quality improvement program focusing on the emergency and follow-up treatment of heart attack patients.

The CRUSADE study analyzes and modifies treatment patterns of over 70,000 patients suffering from chest pain across the United States. The program continually gathers data from participating hospitals and provides feedback to the hospitals with the goal if improving the outcomes of heart attack patients.

The CRUSADE guidelines were developed by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association, and employ the newest treatment protocols in determining as quickly as possible whether a patient has incurred a heart attack or stroke. The guidelines also prescribe what symptoms and tests should be used to evaluate chest pain patients along with specific treatment recommendations.

Sergio Segarra, MD, FACEP, director of emergency medicine at Sharon Regional, oversees the CRUSADE initiative at the hospital. "We're proud to be one of the hospitals chosen to participate in the CRUSADE program. Since the introduction of our Chest Pain Emergency Center close to 10 years ago we've been developing additional programs and participating in national studies to bring our patients the best possible emergency heart attack treatment. Many of our programs result in national recognition, and we expect to be a top-tier hospital in the CRUSADE program as well."

"Our patients benefit from the outstanding cooperative effort we have here between the Emergency Care Center, Heart Institute, and all other hospital departments that assist in the care of heart patients."

Sharon Regional is the only hospital in Mercer County that offers heart attack patients emergency angioplasty and open-heart surgery without the delay of waiting transfer to Pittsburgh or other out-of-town facility.
