March 2002

Growth in patients and services continued in 2001

During the past several years, Sharon Regional has experienced a consistent increase in both inpatient admissions and outpatient utilization. Sharon Regional is now Mercer County’s largest hospital and health care system.

The Heart Institute achieves outcomes in open-heart surgery and angioplasty that are beyond the national quality standards established by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and American College of Cardiology. Open-heart patients who choose to have their procedures close to home praise their surgeons, cardiac nurses, and entire experience. From admission, to immediate postoperative recovery, through discharge, open-heart patients stay in the same unit, eliminating unnecessary transfers and allowing the benefit of recovery with a consistent staff of caregivers.

Patients with chest pain or other heart attack symptoms that indicate heart vessel blockage can have angioplasty, stent insertion with IVUS, or other interventional cardiology procedures promptly without worrying about the impact on their outcome of delaying their treatment while being transported to an out-of-town facility.

During 2001 Sharon Regional enhanced its diagnostic capabilities by acquiring a Marconi Mx8000 multislice CT scanning system that scans 16 times faster than a conventional CT.

Other recent highlights include:
** The arrival of George Garrow, M.D. and Cynthia Sile, M.D., board certified medical oncologists in Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center

** The decision by Standard & Poor’s to retain the A- bond rating on Sharon Regional’s fully insured hospital bonds ยท The awarding of two across-the-board pay increases to assist in the recruitment and retention of quality employees

** The development of a partnership with the Community College of Allegheny County to establish an educational program for EMS personnel in Mercer, Crawford, and Venango counties

** Continued enhancements to The Women’s Center, Emergency Care Center, Behavioral Health Services, Lung Center, RehabCenter, and other centers of excellence.

To assist area residents in quickly obtaining accurate, easy-to-understand health information, Sharon Regional brought LaurusHealth.com to the area through its website. Through the e-Babies program, parents have the option of posting digital images of their newborns on the website.

The accomplishments achieved in 2001 along with plans for 2002 and beyond have one clear goal: To help those who choose Sharon Regional to have the greatest possible opportunity to optimize their outcome.
