Lifestyle education at The Diabetes Center

Cohen Phillips wasn’t overly concerned when he was diagnosed with adult onset, or Type 2, diabetes about five years ago. He continued to live and eat as usual while taking oral medication.

Then a few years and many extra pounds later, an extreme lack of energy led to his enrollment in education classes at Sharon Regional’s Diabetes Center. The Center, located at 2395 Garden Way, Hermitage, offers individual sessions for meal planning, weight control/reduction, and other lifestyle changes. The Center also offers comprehensive diabetes self-management classes that cover all aspects of diabetes and inclusion to a healthy lifestyle. The American Diabetes Association recognizes this education service as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self Management Education.

“Getting the diabetes education, especially learning what I should be doing with my diet was the best thing I ever did,” says Phillips, 42, warehouse coordinator for Sharon Regional. “I had a lot of misconceptions about what I should be eating. Now I have a sense of control over my diabetes.”

Julie Mehler, RN, BSN, diabetes nurse educator at the Center, adds, “Many people have wrong ideas about what they can eat and what they should do with their diabetes. Diabetes education offers a time to clarify those perceptions and empower patients to manage their diabetes. Cohen is a good example of how vital education is in the management of diabetes.”

Phillips currently is part of a national diabetes study involving injections through the office of Nadine Alex, M.D., endocrinologist, at 2395 Garden Way, Hermitage. Dr. Alex and her staff offer patients participation in numerous clinical studies.
