Yeast Infection
Other names: Candidiasis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, candidal
vaginitis, monilial vaginitis, monilial infection, vaginal yeast
infection.
A yeast infection is a type of vaginal infection that
most women will experience at least once. The infection is caused
when normal
yeast present in the vaginal area begins to overproduce.
The overproduction of yeast may be caused by a number of factors,
including antibiotics, birth control pills, normal menstrual periods,
tight-fitting clothes, synthetic underwear and poor hygiene.
Other factors that may increase your likelihood of developing a
yeast infection include diabetes, douching, the use of an IUD, pregnancy
and the use of a scented feminine hygiene products. Symptoms of
a
yeast infection include:
- A thick vaginal discharge
- Itching in the vaginal area
- Burning when urinating or having
sex
Yeast infections are diagnosed
based on a description of symptoms, a physical examination and
a culture and pH check.
Although over-the-counter
medications are available, most physicians prefer you come in for
an exam since the symptoms may be caused by
a condition more serious than a yeast infection. Your physician
may recommend medications to treat the yeast infection.
